I know I shouldn't do this... (but I KNOW that I will)!
« on: October 25, 2015, 08:19:36 PM »

I was looking online when I discovered an 8" Queen Cutlery Company Custom Automatic Stag Swingguard Knife.

Rubens Blades performed the conversion, and it is flawless!

* The handles are two perfectly matched stage scales (4.5" in length).

* A 3.5" D2 tool steel drop point blade.

* The release button consists of an original Queen Cutlery escutcheon (that has been recessed into the handle for safety).

* The blade is a standard "lock back" type that is as tight as a bank vault.

D2 blades have a reputation for fiendishly holding a razor's edge. (The steel is tempered so well that it is hard, without being brittle).

It won't be cheap, ($299.99 + 15.00 for shipping). But a quality knife never is inexpensive. I have engaged in some online correspondence with the man that perfromed the conversion. He informed me that it was extremely difficult to find the proper stag scales from which he made the scales.

Queen has a long-standing reputation for quality knives. (I have a Large Zebrawood Stockman with their D2 Tool Steel and it is tighter than an gnat's rear end).

I think that I'll enjoy this.

And for being very difficult to resharpen.  Never let it get dull.  Regular touch up resharpening will save headaches.

The very one!

Keeping it sharp shouldn't be a problem. Ruben's Blades said that he had sharpened it before marketing it through auto knife. "Touch ups" shouldn't be a problem with a Spyderco Sharpmaker.

Yes, it is costly, but you only buy knives like this once in a lifetime.

Nice, isn't it?

Does anyone want a knife of this type? If so, autoknives.com has an identical model with Cocobolo wood handles/scales. These are great knives for booth field work or collection.

There's just something attractive about a knife that will steadfastly hold an edge, while looking this good in the field. Cheap, it isn't, but quality never is.  "You only go around once in life". If you have a beautiful tool that will "go the extra mile" when you're away from the homestead, it's money well spent.

Cheers!

Spyderco's SharpMaker is a quality piece of equipment that works as advertised.

I have it in my hot little hands. The firing button is very hard to trigger, (no accidental openings with this puppy) but the blade's edge will need reprofling. The D2 steel is "diamond hard" and if taken to the fine stone of the Sharpmaker would take days to profile the edge. I may have to take this on an 80 mile journey to a professional sharpener to put the proper edge on it.

The handle is darker than those in the picture, because the stage wasn't "rounded" to expose the white of the stag horn as was illustrated in the picture.

I love this little automatic. It is an excellent "pocket auto" and will probably outlast me.

Cheers.

The D2 steel is "diamond hard" and if taken to the fine stone of the Sharpmaker would take days to profile the edge.

Wish I still had the huge D2 shear blade and forge to work it in.  The two knives I made with it were hand forged to rough shape and the blades finished out on a slack belt sander then polished with a buffer wheel down to a mirror finish.  As far as I know, neither has ever actually been resharpened, (the one I have has been cleaned, but never resharpened) though they only see actual use very rarely.  I wish a camera could show the almost liquid quality of the resulting shine on the blades, as it makes for a great contrast with the hammered finish on the handle.
